How To Avoid Bringing Pests With You During Your Move

If you are planning on moving to a new home, make sure you don't bring along any unwanted guests. Unfortunately, if you are moving a lot of cardboard boxes and pulling items from your storage unit, you might be bringing spiders, bed bugs, and cockroaches with you. Here are some tips to prevent this:

Use New Cardboard Boxes

A lot of pests will hide in your cardboard boxes, so this is the first thing you should check. If you have cardboard boxes that have been sitting in your garage for years, it is best to dispose of them and get new boxes. They could be riddled with cockroaches, spiders, and other pests. Empty them out carefully and use brand new cardboard boxes during your move.

You can get boxes from local movers, home improvement stores, or from local grocery stores. If you get them from nearby stores, check them thoroughly to be sure they don't have spiders hidden inside.

Inspect All Stored Items

If you have stuff that is stored in boxes in your garage or self-storage unit, make sure you inspect these items before bringing them to your new home. Don't just move the boxes as-is because there is no telling what is inside. You could be bringing along any number of pests, or even mice and rats that have made a home inside the boxes.

This is why it is imperative to remove items and place them into different boxes. The exception is if items are stored in airtight, plastic containers. Also make sure you look through furniture, clothing, and holiday decorations that are stored since insects will hide in there as well.

Dispose of Boxes Once You Unpack

As soon as you bring your belongings to your new home and begin to unpack, take the cardboard boxes outside and have them recycled. You don't want to keep these boxes inside your home, even if they are new. They could attract more pests which might turn your bedroom into their new safe haven. It is best to get rid of them as soon as possible, whether you brought new or old boxes.

Wrap Your Mattresses

Bed bugs are another big problem, so also check your mattresses and wrap them before you move. By wrapping them, you prevent a bed bug infestation when you are moving. Bed bugs could be found anywhere, but they are most commonly found in the creases of mattresses, so inspecting them and protecting them during the move can help you prevent an infestation.
